LIVESTRONG Challenge Philly - Huge Success

Teammates Steve & Eric at LIVESTONG Challenge Philly 2009On Saturday August 21st and Sunday August 22nd, Team Little. Yellow. Different. Members took to the streets around Montgomery County Community College - on foot and on two wheels - to make a difference.  The LIVESTRONG Challenge Philly event is one of the signature fundraising events for LIVESTRONG (The Lance Armstrong Foundation).  As a team, we raised a total of $5,735 and recruited a total of 15 members.  As our innaugeral year as a team, we are very proud of these numbers.

Sadly, we had two members that were not able to participate.  Teammate Jill was sidelined by a stress fracture - yet she still showed to cheer on the other runners and participants (not just LYD Teammates) on Saturday.  Teammate Ryan was unable to participate in his ride event due to an injury involving his crank shaft.  A few stitches later, he was able to make it out to support the cause, but was unable to participate this year.

Despite all odds, Teammate Amandah was able to make it out for her 10k run on Saturday.  It seemed like everything was stacked against her.  Her car broke down on her way to pick up her packet on Friday evening, and she nearly got stuck again on Saturday on her way to the event.  Thanks to the wonderful LIVESTRONG folk, we were able to grab her packet for her, and Amandah arrived just in time for the starting gun.

Teammate Frank was marching to a beat of a different drummer on his 10k.  Not fully confident that he’d complete the 10k, he had us all worried at the finish line as the hour passed - especially wife and fellow teammate Colleen.  But the joke was on all of us when Frank crossed the finish line and he started sharing photos he took with his phone of the beautiful houses that he saw along the way.  Well, that’s one way to keep your mind off the leg pains.

But the crescendo of the weekend was on Sunday, August 22nd when teammates Steve and Eric took to the road on their 70 mile journey.  It took them nearly 8 hours of peddling to complete, thanks to the pouring rain, thunderstorms, trecherous conditions and geology that somehow made every hill uphill both out and in…we’ll give them credit for the feat.

We’re proud of everyone that came out and participated this year.  We’ll be back next year, so stay tuned for details near the end of the year.

50% of our Fundraising Goal, 2 shy of our recruitment goal

We always feel its goot to set the bar high, and we did just that this year.  We set a goal to recruit 15 members and raise $10,000 our innaugeral year.  On the recruitment front, we’re standing at 13 members as of this writing.  If you still wish to join up, there’s still time.  There are over 2,700 walkers and runners and nearly 4,000 riders signed up overall, and you can be a part of that.  Better yet, you can be a part of Team Little. Yellow. Different.  If you’d like to join up, visit our team page to join

On the fundraising front, we were perhaps overly optimisic.  $10,000 is a lot of money for just 15 people to raise.  Still, we put the bar there and hoped.  Well, as of today, we just crossed the halfway point.  With only 8 days left before check-in, it doesn’t look like we’ll get there.  But that doesn’t mean we can raise more money.  If you would like to sponsor any of our members, visit our team page and follow the links to any of our members’ personal fundraising pages.  If you just want to donate - feel free to pick someone at random or just pick any of our members who have not yet met their goal.

Just 8 days left!  Make sure your donation or participation counts, time is of the essence.

Welcome New Teammate: Ryan Wolcott

It seems like we’re spreading the word - we’re the little team that could.  We’ve just registered our thirteenth member:  Ryan Wolcott.  Ryan is a cyclist that will be shooting for the 45 mile trek.  Ryan also participated in the LIVESTRONG Challenge last year, so he’s no rookie to the Yellow Mile.  We are of course happy to have him aboard.  So be sure to throw a few bucks towards this excellent cause via Ryan’s Fundraising Page.

We are now just two teammates shy of our membership goal.  Every little bit helps us on our mission to spread awareness and support those who are affected by Cancer.  Join our team and participate in the 5k run/walk, 10k run/walk or one of the many ride events.

Welcome New Teammate: Krissy North

Our latest member, Krissy, is the wife of Travis and brother-in-law to Steve - both co-founders of Team Little. Yellow. Different.  With all the LIVESTRONG talk in the family, it was only a matter of time before Krissy got on board.  Krissy will be walking the 5K route to help raise money and awareness of Cancer and the LIVESTRONG Organization.  If you would like to sponsor her, please visit her fundraising page to make a donation.

We are just a little shy of three weeks left before the challenge.  As of this writing, there is still room for participants.  LIVESTRONG’s Goal for Philly is for 7,000 participants.  Our Team goal is for 15 members - we’re at 12.  Will you be one of the three (or more) members to help us round out our goal?  Join us!

40% of our goal

With just a month remaining before the LIVESTRONG Challenge, we are now at 40% of our goal.  Team Little, Yellow, Different has raised a total of $4,098 of our $10,000 goal.  There’s not much time, you can help us to meet our goal by sponsoring any one of our teammates on our Team Fund Raising Page.

I cannot stress enough - every little bit helps.  Thanks again to LIVESTRONG’s wonderful partners, all of the overhead is covered this year - which means every cent of every dollar donated goes towards LIVESTRONG’s wonderful programs.  Program’s like LIVESTRONG’s SurvivorCare, a hotline/online advisory program for those suffering from cancer and their families to get the support, referrals and help they need.

So even the small donations matter.  A buck.  Five bucks.  Ten.  Sponsor what you can, and I can assure you it will make a difference.

Welcome New Teammate: Michelle Shekari

We have a new teammate:  Michelle Shekari.  Michelle comes to us through her friend and fellow teammate Amandah.  Together, we are all taking the Challenge to fight cancer through increased awareness and money raised for the LIVESTRONG organization.  The race takes place August 21st and 22nd just outside of Philadelphia. Please welcome Michelle, and feel free to support the cause by sponsoring her for the LIVESTRONG Challenge.  Remember - every little bit help.s

36% of our Fundraising Goal

Time is flying by!  We are just six weeks shy of the Philly LIVESTRONG Challenge, and we’re all training hard and raising money.  As of this writing, we are sitting at $3,640 raised by our team members - that’s 36% of our overall fundraising goal of $10,000.  Did we set the bar too high?  We hope not.  But that’s up to you.

So here’s how you can help:  Visit our Team Little. Yellow. Different. Fund Raising Headquarters and donate to any one of our members.  If you don’t know anyone, donate a few bucks towards the member with the lowest amount raised.  Even if you can only spare $5, it goes a long way.

Thank you, and LIVESTRONG.

Welcome New Member: Julie Thomas

In an unprecedented wave, we have yet another new member to announce - the third in two days.  Today, we would like to introduce our newest member:  Julie Thomas.  Julie is the twin sister of Jill, another of our recent teammates.  Julie is planning to run the 5k event in August.  But don’t be surprised if she ends up running the 10k.  Be sure to visit her fund-raising page to sponsor her in her challenge.  And remember, ever tiny bit counts.

See how this works?  We’re all connected - and our influence as Team LIVESTRONG grows each of us and our interactions and acquaintances.  That is, of course, the whole model behind LIVESTRONG - to spread the knowledge out across as many people as possible.  One of our goals - besides raising money for this great cause - is to share our experiences and our wisdom.  Education is inevitably going to be the end of Cancer.  So why not pick up the torch and help us fight cancer?  Why not join Team Little. Yellow. Different.

Welcome New Member: Amanda Povilitus

We would like to welcome yet another 10k runner to Team Little. Yellow. Different.:  Amanda Povilitus.  Amanda is someone we met through the Nike+ Human Race 10k late in 2009 where she served as a Human Race Ambassador for the Philly region.  Her love of running and her outgoing personality is going to be a huge asset to the team.  So be sure to check out Amanda’s personal fund-raising page to sponsor her commitment to the fight against cancer.

If you’re on the fence about joining us for the Challenge, think of it this way:  The LIVESTRONG Challenge is not only a great way to raise money for an incredible cause - but it’s a great way to meet like minded individuals.  Some of us run/bike for competition, some of us run/bike just to stay in shape.  But on August 21st and 22nd - we’re all running/biking for the same reason:  To fight cancer.

Welcome New Member: Jill Czahor

We’d like to welcome our newest member:  Jill Czahor.  She has pledged to run the 10k in August as a demonstration of her commitment to LIVESTRONG’S mission.  Jill is carrying the Team Little. Yellow. Different. as she helps us all to raise money for this awesome cause.  With members like ours, and with an organization like LIVESTRONG, cancer’s days are numbered.  So be sure to visit Jill’s personal fund-raising page to sponsor her run.

We are always looking for new members, so if you’d like to take up the banner and helps us out, why don’t you join us
